Artist's Comments

Talk about an oversight! I'm not quite sure why I haven't uploaded this before, but here is the Wyoming Dinosaur Center's specimen of Archaeopteryx. The legs are a tad longer than average for the genus, and the arms noticeably shorter, adding to the (largely correct) impression that it's "just another" feathered theropod rather than "a bird".

And it's worth mentioning that people who say (and you know who you are): "Archaeopteryx is just another bird and doesn't look like a dinosaur" are either higher than a kite or have never seen the skeleton of any bird or dinosaur in their lives.

Or possibly both.

Yeah, both Greg Paul and Paul Sereno had interpretted earlier specimens as having a hyper-extendable second toe, but our specimen has fantastically preserved feet and there is no question about it, the articular surface is extended like it is in deinonychosaurs.

The left toe seems to have 5 digits! :p
Nicely done!

Left foot, sorry!

reminds me of Rahonavis.

Huh? Are you counting the MT5 splint at the ankle?
:iconbrad-ysaurus:
No, he's misinterpreting the silhouette of the claw sheath for the fourth toe as another toe medial to the third.
:iconshartman:
Ahh, that makes sense. I guess I can see that. The sheaths are just long (unless they slipped a bit, which is possible, but I've restored them to the length apparently demonstrated in the fossil).
